Amartya Sen: “Democracy as a Universal Value”

In this 1999 essay, Sen analyzes the definition of democracy, its benefits, and the basis for the claim that democracy is a universal value. After examining arguments against the democratic nature of Asian and Islamic values, the author argues that no culture is based on a set of completely homogenous beliefs, concluding that democracy does have the ability to flourish in all cultures.
