Woodrow Wilson’s Campaign Speeches “The New Freedom”

Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) was president of the United States from 1913 to 1921, a period including World War I and the formation of the League of Nations. Wilson ran his 1912 presidential campaign on the progressive “New Freedom” platform, which called for such reforms as limits on campaign contributions by corporations, tariff reductions, new and stronger antitrust laws, banking and currency reform, and a federal income tax. In this excerpt from Wilson’s collected campaign Speeches and Declarations, translated to Persian by Tavaana, Wilson praises the common man as the “dynamic force that is lifting the levels of society.” Declaring that the American political system had for too long been dominated by too small a group, Wilson expresses the need for a government reflecting the “whole body of the people of the United States.”
