Leading abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison launched The Liberator in 1831 with “Prospectus,” an open letter to the public. Garrison advocated for the immediate emancipation of slaves in the United States, a new and unpopular position at the time. He was committed to social change through nonviolent means and tried to convince ordinary Americans by appealing to their conscience. He specifically refers to the Declaration of Independence as a legal and moral basis for equality amongst all human beings. The Liberator remained in circulation until slavery was abolished in the United States by the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
