This course, based on the Center for Civic Education curriculum, explores the relationship between democracy and citizens’ responsibilities and rights. The course delves into the meaning of democracy, including different democratic traditions and the prerequisites for a political culture that supports democracy. The curriculum explores the features of democracy, from accountability and the rule of law to an effective, functioning state. The function of civil society in democracy and democratic transitions is also addressed. The course goes on to explore the requirements for successful transitions from authoritarian regimes to democracy. Students will embark on an in-depth study of the role of the citizen in democracy, including both their rights and how those rights may be protected as well as their responsibilities and necessary knowledge and skills for active citizenship. The course also covers different forms of participation in civic life, in addition to the importance of civil disobedience. Throughout, students will connect these themes to the Iranian political and social context.
