Lesson 4: Domestic Violence (Violence Between Couples), Part Two

In this lesson, Shahrzad Pourabdollah discusses different theories of domestic violence and its root causes. Domestic violence is not only limited to heterosexual relationships; it also occurs in homosexual relationships. Acknowledging that domestic violence exists in every culture and society, Ms. Pourabdollah discusses the causes of domestic violence with an emphasis on attachment theory. She then examines several theories which attempt to explain why individuals remain in abusive relationships, including the learned helplessness theory and Stockholm syndrome. The psychological, sociological, and feminist theories of violence in relationships are also discussed. Ultimately, the class recommends that victims resolve the problem of violence with the help of a counselor who has the appropriate expertise.
