1. What is Issued-Based Advocacy?: Hossein Ghazian

This session introduces issue-based advocacy in four sections. The session opens through a few introductory examples that lay a clear background about the concept of issue-based advocacy and its scope. In the next section, students become familiar with the relationship between conflict, specifically scarcity-induced conflict, issue-based advocacy, and methods of conflict resolution. The third section focuses on the topic of issue-based advocacy and elections. Historically, elections open up a diverse host of possibilities to raise demands and advocate for various issues. Furthermore, as elections are the institutional instrument whereby various parties and factions seek to advance competing interests and demands, students learn about different advocacy approaches to elections. They also learn how each approach is best suited to electoral contests, as well as how to shape and customize demands based on a chosen approach.
