2: Violence Against Women

In the second lesson of this webinar series, Iranian journalist and women’s rights activist Parvin Bakhtiarnejad examines violence as behavior that attacks and limits a victim’s autonomy and freedom. Violence against women is a widespread phenomenon and is not limited to a specific group or social class. Besides physical violence, there are other forms of violence committed against women which are common among the educated and upper classes. Children who are raised within these societies are invariably exposed to this behavior and way of thinking. As a result, boys in these societies are brought up to be independent, while girls are taught to be dependent and subordinate. In this lesson, the frequency of honor killings in different regions of Iran is discussed. The lesson concludes by presenting solutions to counter this problem, suggesting that the most important solution is to strengthen civil society and raise public awareness.
