Lesson 1: Civil Society and the Political Theory of Democratic Change

This session offers a wide-ranging analysis of civil society as critical to for democratic movements working against repressive and totalitarian governments. Mr. Casey examines the pivotal role of civil society as a network of voluntary civic collaboration that can cultivate democratic movements and allow them to develop. Mr. Casey also explores the different conceptions of civil society in the history of political thought; while the idea of civil society exists within most Western political schools of thought, the classic texts of Western political theory do not share a common understanding of civil society or its relation to the state.
