Lesson 4: The Rule of Law and Free Trial Rights

This course provides a strong foundation of knowledge in universal human rights complaint mechanisms as it raises awareness of international standards, laws, norms and advocacy tools, focusing particularly on civil and political rights, religious freedom, women’s rights, and the rights of political prisoners. Participants explore the historical development of humanitarian law; the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; and the range of contemporary declarations, conventions, covenants and other instruments for human rights protection, especially ICCPR and CEDAW. Students learn and discuss the history of international human rights advocacy efforts for Iran while acquiring intellectual and practical skills for collecting and analyzing human rights data and advocating at the international level.
