Lesson 8: Prisons

This lesson is devoted to one of the last stages of the judicial process: prison. The lesson begins by narrating the experience of a political prisoner in Iran. That experience demonstrates many violations of the rights of the accused and of convicted individuals in prison. The lesson then examines the different forms and categories of prisons, as well as the relationship between prisons and wider society. By comparing rates of imprisonment in different countries, the lesson identifies the most common crimes among prisoners and the reasons why Iran’s prison population is growing.
