7:From Sharia to Islamization of the State

The “implementation of sharia” or the “implementation of Islam” constitutes the main pillar of the idea of “Islamic” government. When the government is obliged to implement sharia, it ignores differences and diversity in jurists’ opinions in favor of one jurist’s opinion or fatwa. When sharia becomes law in a country, religious and non-religious debate about the validity of the law becomes impossible. The legal system of the country becomes sacred, and queries or doubts regarding it become a potentially capital offense.

Sharia is a product of clerical institutions. In the “Islamic government,” however, it is an essential tool for the government to repress people and deprive them of their democratic rights and fundamental freedoms. How did sharia turn into the main pillar of these governments and their Islamization of society?
