Taking the Pulse of Democracy
In this webinar series, King’s College London Lecturer in Politics and Contemporary History Andrew Blick provides guidance for democracy assessment, based on the State of Democracy Assessment Framework developed by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA). While emphasizing the long-term nature of democratic development and the possibility for both gains and reversals within the same country, Blick lays out the central debates over democracy and the many forms it can take to reflect the people’s choice. He delves into central foundations of democracy before concluding with practical advice on crafting a broad-based and impartial democracy assessment that takes into account a country’s official position, practical position, and fulfillment of democratic pillars.
