Lesson 1: the Definition of Democracy and Its Origins

In the first lesson of this series, King’s College London Lecturer in Politics and Contemporary History Andrew Blick defines democracy based on its Greek origins, the evolution of the concept, and the debates central to it, from the dangers of ignorant prejudice to vulnerability to outside intervention. From these ideas, he identifies a two-pronged definition involving both popular control and political equality. Within this definition, Blick explores the most important democratic concepts, concluding with the influence of a country’s external environment on its democratic development
